Excerpt
I walk into the barn with every intention of looking for the horse, but my feet have other ideas, and suddenly, I find myself standing at the rickety old ladder that leads up to the hayloft.
Swallowing nervously, I slide my hand along the wood.
How many times did I climb this ladder?
I give it a little shake and decide itâs sturdy enough.
Then I climb.
Slowly.
The last thing I want to do is fall.
Or drop the wine.
That would be a tragedy.
I make it to the top, and as soon as I do, a tidal wave of emotions and memories wash over me. Staggering to the nearest bale of hay, I sit down and close my eyes.
Our hayloft was sacred. It was where Noah kissed me for the first time. One year later, it was where we lost our virginity. For more than two years it was our hiding placeâour little sanctuary from the nosy eyes of the world.
Something in the corner of the loft catches my eye. Its royal blue and whiteâour high school colorsâand I know itâs our blanket. We tried to remember to lay it down every time, but it didnât matter. When youâre naked, hay manages to find its way into places where hay just shouldnât be found.
I sigh deeply and lean my head back, lifting the bottle to my lips. Itâs fruity and cool and does nothing but conjure more memories.
His gentle hands. My soft moans. Our heated kisses.
They play like a symphony in my head.
As promised, the storm moves in. The wind howls and the downpour rattles the roof. As the thunder rolls above my head, the barn lights start to dance.
But Iâm not afraid.
This is home.
Through the thunder, I hear Noahâs voice calling my name, followed by the sound of hooves.
Crap.
I sneak a glance over the side of the loft, just in time to spot Noah as he leads Midnight inside, talking quietly to her as he guides her to the stall. Heâs soaked and cursing the storm.
I close my eyes and curse my own stupidity.
âHer car's still here, but she's not in the office . . .â
I can hear the concern in his voice, and it breaks me. I canât let him worry, no matter how embarrassing this is going to be.
And make no mistake. Itâs gonna be awkward.
Leaning over, I take a deep breath and look down. Heâs standing just below the loft, his face turned toward the open barn doors.
âNoah . . . Iâm up here.â
He freezes, spins around, and looks up.
âAmber?â
âUmm . . . hi.â
âWhat are you doing up there?â
I hold up the bottle of strawberry wine and tell him the truth.
âReminiscing.â
Noahâs shoulders sag, and he bows his head. I hold my breath while he looks out at the storm. Then, he lifts his eyes to meet mine once again.
"Want some company?"

I stop to let this sink in. I'm a father without a son? Is this possible? My lips tremble at the thought of the last time I'd seen him only a month ago. He never brought Holland, wanting to spend as much time together, just him and me. If I'd known it was all the time Iâd had with him, would I have held him longer? Done anything different? It doesn't matter, not now that I essentially have my father status stripped from me.
As if staring at Dear Dad isn't enough to rip my heart out, I begin to devour the letter and his last words.
Dear Dad,
Fuck, If you're reading this, it means I'm gone. I had one dream, growing old with Holland. Death won't stop me from providing for my wife. And because you're the best man I know, what I'm about to askâmy last requestâI know you'll do. Please take care of Holland. Take her back to California with you. It's a lotâI know. But, Iâm placing my most precious possession in your hands.
See, we don't have much saved and the military won't let Holland stay in government quarters after my death. I have very little to provide for her if I die. I have my SGLI (life insurance), but itâs not enough after she pays for school. But she's talented in design. Please help her get on her feet. Love her like you love me. She has nothing to go back to in Virginia. Her family will suck the little life insurance she has of mine dry.
Mom would have felt so abandoned if I went straight to you from high school. But if I trust anyone with Holland, it's you.
One of my regrets in life is not fighting Mom to come live with you. By the time I knew I could stand up to her, I had met Holland. Please don't tell Mom this. She tried, I know she did. She loves me, this I never doubted. But I wish I knew you better, Dad.
Please know that every moment we had together, I treasured. I know that's not a real dude-like thing to say, but I did. You made me the man who Holland fell in love with. Let her know when she falls in love again, it's okay! I want everything for her that we couldnât have together.
And, Dad, I know Mom did you wrong. You never made me choose, but it made you cynical. That's why you've never committed to anyone else. Please, find a woman you love and live the life I couldn't.
You will always be a dadâmy dad.
Love,
Scott
He has given me closure and purpose. In his honor, I'll make sure Holland is taken care of.

She ran a hand through my hair, roughing it at the top, while I gazed at her, soaking in the way her light-green eyes looked almost brown in the dim overhead lights. âI guess this is goodbye, huh?â
I shook my head as my brows pulled together. âNo.â
âTobias,â she said, her tone soft and scolding.
âItâs not.â I searched her expression, praying I wasnât being an idiot. All this time together, the nights weâd shared, the secrets weâd kept. It couldnât only be me. I swallowed. âThe way I see it, Iâll be focused on basketball, and youâll have dance. That doesnât mean we canât talk. That doesnât mean weâll never see each other again.â
She looked lost in her thoughts for a minute, and I knew she was considering my words. âSo, what? Weâre long-distance ⦠friends?â
I leaned forward, placing my forehead against hers. âYou know as well as I that you canât put a label on what we are. Weâre just Amelia and Tobias. Weâre moon and earth, living among the stars and sun. Weâre everything. And no matter the distance, we still make sense together.â
Her next breath hitched as she sucked it in. âThatâs beautiful, but gravity weakens with distance, remember?â
I shook my head, refusing to accept her point. âNot when it comes to us.â I swallowed around the thickness building in my throat. âNot when we defy gravity.â
I kissed her hard, pulling her body close while her mouth molded to mine. We fit so well, not even she could deny that. And she didnât. Not when I stripped her of her clothes and lay her down. Not when I buried my head between her legs and stroked her devilishly with my tongue. And not when my fingers pushed inside her, working her center until she screamed my name like it was a curse word.
A layer of sweat coated her body when I pulled her into my arms and wrapped her legs around my waist. Our mouths stayed on each other as I walked her to her bedroom and placed her on her bed. I yanked my clothes off next and kicked them to the side before sitting at the edge of her bed and pulling a condom from her nightstand. My cock was hard as stone as I rolled it on, already missing the feel of her wrapped around me.
And when I hovered above her, fitting myself to her body and readying myself for that first thrust, I leaned in to steal another kiss before placing my mouth on her ear. âIâll find my way back to you, Amelia.â I bit down on tender skin and nudged against her entrance, relishing the moan that slipped past her throat. âIâm about to make sure you donât forget that.â

âThis is quite the reunion then.â
âOne I would have avoided if possible.â
âYou said you have business to discuss? Iâm so intrigued.â His facetiousness, which was once fun, has now turned biting. Weâre on opposite sides, no longer partners in crime.
âI want to meet Mr. Nilsson, and youâre going to introduce me.â
âI donât know who Nilsson is. And he doesnât go by Mr. Nilsson.â
I sigh at the obvious misstep. He knows what heâs doing.
âIf you donât know him then how do you know he doesnât go by Mr. Nilsson?â
âSorry?â
âYou said you donât know him, so how do you know the nomenclature he prefers?â
âAll staff are briefed on the host.â
âAnd youâre just a regular, nobody, member of the staff.â
âYes. Thatâs meââ
âSir!â A young man in a waiterâs tux bursts through the patio doors. âThe caterer is freaking out. She canât find her late-night peanut butter and jelly puff pastries.â
âWhy are you asking me?â he asks stiffly without looking away from me. âWhy would I know where the catererâs puff pastries are?â
The kid looks like the waiter is a world-class idiot and speaks very slowly, a thick New York accent peeking out.
âBecause youâre the chief of staff, which you made us repeat back to you three times in a row. In unison.â
He glances at me, and I raise my eyebrow, a victorious but subtle gesture.
He turns back to the boy, clearing his throat.
âTell the caterer to check the walk-in in the second kitchen. Some of the overflow went there.â
âThanks.â The kid is gone as fast as he arrived.
Kai's expression is as innocent as a newborn baby taking a shit.
âSurely the chief of staff, the representative of the man of the house, knows and has met his boss.â
He folds his hand behind his back, rocks on his feet.
âEven if I do know Nilsson a little, why would I agree to arrange a meeting?â
âBecause I have something he wants.â
âAnd whatâs that?â
âA life away from the spotlight. Away from the people he hates. An easy life with no expectations.â
He stops moving, his eyes narrowing. âWhat exactly are you proposing?â
âJust that. A proposal. Of marriage.â
He stares at me, his eyes wide, and then he laughs. I knew he would, the idea so outrageous and outdated. But I have my sources, and I know Nilsson is as desperate as I am. I keep my expression neutral, unaffected by his reaction.
âThere are at least a hundred women,â he says, finally composing himself, âinside that ballroom that want to provide what youâre suggesting. What makes you think you have anything to offer? Your family reputation is tarnished, thanks to that article. What advantage could you give Nilsson?â
Heâs listening. Time for my pitch.
âThose women come with rules and expectations. They want his name and the privilege that brings. They want him at their side at galas, showing him off like a fucking engagement ring or a puppy with a diamond collar.â
âWhat do you come with?â
âFreedom. The freedom for Nilsson to do whatever the fuck he wants. Stay holed up in this mansion. Travel the world. Never see me, not once. Iâll agree to anything he wants, as long as I get what I want.â
âHeâs already free. Heâs richer than Croesusââ
âWhich I hear will change if he doesnât marry by the end of the year.â
If silence could kill, Kaiâs weapon of choice would be made of a narrow looks.
âHow do you know that?â
Play it cool. Hook him and trap him.
âI have my sources.â
We face off for a moment, the tension riding us, stirring us. Eventually he shrugs, acting nonchalant.
âIt doesnât matter. Even with that knowledge, you donât have anything special to offer. You donât know him, and he doesnât want just anyone.â
âYouâre right. No one knows him or what he wants. I donât know what happened to him after his parentsâ death, what made him the way he is now. Maybe heâs disfigured or crippled or just really really shy. Maybe heâs a drag queen by night, and he knows at least a quarter of the men and women in there wonât give to his charities anymore if they discover his true self. I donât know why, and I donât need to know. I donât care. I want one thing.â
He doesnât ask, and I donât wait for him to. I donât need his permission or his acknowledgment.
You donât own me.
âI want the money.â
He takes a step back, disgust clear on his face, even in the dim light of the patio.
âOf course you do. Christ.â
âI want a limited amount, and Iâm willing to sign a contract, a prenup, whatever he thinks necessary.â
âHow much?â
âThatâs for Mr. Nilsson and me to discuss.â
He shakes his head and the disappointed expression almost makes me waver. Almost.
âYouâre just like them,â he grits out.
âWhat did you think Iâd become after you disappeared?â
Itâs the only memory I let slip, the only sign Iâm angry at him and still holding a grudge.
His eyes are fathomless as he takes me in. âBetter.â
He turns on a stiff heel, and as he walks out, calls back, âNilsson will be in touch.â
âHow? A text?â I lay on the sarcasm, thick and cynical.
He pauses, his hand hovering over the doorknob lightly, no sign seeing me has had any effect on him at all.
âEmail. Cell service isnât very reliable around these parts.â
âJust like the people here. What a life he must live.â
He grins. Itâs cold. So unlike anything I remember. âLife is the ultimate delivery system for disillusionment.â
With a snap of the door frame, heâs gone.
I sag against the railing and down my glass of champagne. The alcohol burns and carbonation fills my lungs like balloons.
There. Itâs done.
The wheels are in motion. Iâm on my way to seeing the arts program finally succeed, and I survived a meeting with Kai.

Peyton Kroft was his forever, until the unthinkable happened. Walking away all those years ago had been the right thing to do, but he's ready to put the past behind him. Moving to San Francisco and hiring his first love, the city's top designer, is a good place to start. He didn't expect seeing her to stir up feelings he thought he'd long buried.
Jackson Vance broke her heart. He took half of it with him on his way out of town. Picking up the pieces hadn't been easy, but more than nine years later, Peyton is living her best life. Coming face to face with her first love is not on the agenda. He is beautiful, broken, and everything she's ever wanted. Needed.
The past still hovers like a dark cloud. But every dark cloud has a silver-lining.
Laura Pavlov writes sweet and sexy contemporary romance that will make you both laugh and cry. She is happily married to her college sweetheart, mom to two awesome almost-grown kids, and dog-whisperer to a couple crazy yorkies. Laura resides in Las Vegas where she is living her own happily ever after.
